Exhibition 2008

Competition exhibition “interspaceing” on the premises of the future Textile Centre at Haslach, July 14 until September 15, 2008
This year another exhibition of international textile art will be held in the course of the summer symposium under the ambiguous title “zwischenräume(n)”[interspaceing]. The reason for the choice of this topic is the current situation of the association Textile Kultur Haslach with regard to space and time. They will at long last be able to move into permanent premises with their classes and exhibitions and will consequently face a transitional period of restructuring. All this, because a large Textile Centre has been founded at Haslach, which will house the historical Weavers’ Museum, the textile manufacturing company, parts of the local textile school and the association Textile Kultur Haslach under one roof starting in summer 2009.

There are so many ideas and questions with regard to moving-in, furnishing and co-habitation with other institutions. Reason enough for the organizers to think about the space as such, about the relationship between textiles and space and make this the subject matter of the exhibition this year. The following issues create the basis for the artistic approach to the topic as set out in the application papers:

How to move in?
What are the possibilities offered by new spaces?
How to interpret new spaces?
What might originate from moving in together?
How to attract new things and ideas?
What mistakes to avoid when moving in?
How to furnish and equip?
What do intermediate spaces offer?
How to create textile spaces?
How much space is there between the threads of a cloth?
Does the warp after beaming inhabit the loom?
Can there be things textile without a space?

The result of our call for proposals was more than 100 applications from 17 nations with the most diverse approaches and interpretations of the topic. A jury consisting of experts chose 24 works which will be presented in Haslach. When selecting, the jury took into consideration to cover as wide a scope of artistic approaches as possible. This was to show up contemporary positions dealing with the medium textile in an artistic way and trigger off discussions in order to point out the concern of the future Textile Centre which wants to be the home for manifold textile discourses. The exhibition will already be held on the newly adapted premises of the future Textile Centre at Haslach and is intended to call attention to this ambitious project.

The opening will be on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 8 p.m. at the “Vonwiller-Obermüller” area as part of the opening of the Textile Symposium “Textile Kultur Haslach”. On Thursday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 22 at 8 p.m. there will be guided tours through the exhibition at which some of the exhibiting artists will be present.
